Bordeaux is now inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO !
It is the recognition of the value and heritage unity of our city. Bordeaux is exemplary for the unity of its urban and architectural expression, classical and neoclassical architecture, which has seen virtually no stylistic break for more than two centuries.
The urban project launched in 1996 by Alain Juppé and implemented by the renovation of the facades, the design of embankement along the Garonne, commissioning of the tramway powered by the ground, the requalification of urban areas has strengthened this desire for protection and enhancement the heritage of Bordeaux
Bordeaux now has nearly 350 listed buildings or listed historical monuments, including 3 churches registered as a World Heritage Site since 1998 for roads to "Saint Jacques de Compostelle".
It is also the result of a lengthy consultation with all communities and state authorities.
At the initiative of Alain Juppé, the city has built and defended its candidacy with the help of architects, urban planners, historians, researchers, and representatives of organizations involved in heritage preservation.
The originality of the approach of Bordeaux lies in the importance of the classified perimeter. Bordeaux is the first urban set distinguished on a perimeter as vast and complex.
The classified area corresponds to the inside of the boulevards, up the Garonne included. It extends over 1 810 ha, or nearly half the area of the city. For all cities or classified areas World Heritage, listing in the World heritage had a very beneficial effect on tourism in the years that followed. It is an additional asset for the cultural and economic attractiveness of our city and our agglomeration.
